Water Commissioner's meetings are held at 3:00 PM on the second Tuesday of each month at the Water department (58 Kavanagh Way, Edgartown).

The Water Department's mission is to:

• Provide the town of Edgartown with abundant, safe drinking water.
• Provide the town of Edgartown with adequate water supply and pressure for fire fighting.
• Maintain pump stations and distribution systems
• Manage and protect current water supplies.
• Seek new sources for future water supply demands.
• Respond professionally to the public and government officials requests, inquires and problems.
• Follow enterprise funding to offset all water department expenses and user fees.

The Edgartown Water Department monitors the condition of the aquifer on a daily basis. This information is then examined for trends that indicate the water availability and potential well production. This information is also compared to historical data. At present, all operations within the Water Department are normal, with the aquifer in the same condition as years past. Should we recognize a trending pattern that would suggest a diminishing water supply, we will inform the public and advise accordingly.

Water Conservation Tips

Here are just a few examples of how you can save water:

1. Do not over water your lawn.
2. Water plants with handheld hose or water can. If you do use a sprinkler for outdoor watering, make sure to position it properly to avoid watering sidewalks or drive ways.
3. Water your lawn in the early morning or evening to avoid excess evaporation.
4. If you have a swimming pool, use a cover. You can cut by 90 percent the loss of water by evaporation.
5. Use a broom instead of a hose to clean walkways.
6. Turn the water off when brushing your teeth or shaving.
7. Take showers instead of baths.
8. Make sure you have a full load before running your dishwasher or clothes washer.
9. Fix leaking faucets and toilets. A leak of one drop per second can waste up to 2,400 gallons per year, and a leaky toilet can waste as much as 200 gallons per day.
10. Install water saving fixtures and toilets.

It is easy to practice water conservation; just think before you turn on the tap. Besides preserving one of our natural resources, water conservation can also cause a significant decrease in your water bill.

On November 7, 2025,  the Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs declared a Level 2 – Significant Drought for the islands region of the Commonwealth.  Their determination was based on soil moisture content, the lack of rainfall and the dry conditions they observed throughout the area.  Our historical data would suggest that the aquifer is presently operating at the same characteristics as in the past and well within our annual trends.  While this is good news, we believe in proactive decisions, resource management and conservation.  It is for this reason that we have upgraded our Voluntary Water Conservation Measures to a mandatory level, specifically for outdoor watering.  MassDEP’s recommendation for water conservation in a Level 2 Drought states: All nonessential water use restricted to one day per week, before 9 a.m. and after 5 p.m., except that watering ornamentals and flower gardens with hand-held hose, drip irrigation or watering cans may be permitted.
